A near-future setting starts with just another ordinary day and then moves right into the apocalypse. Thankfully the kids are safely sealed in the store for the majority of it, they get their news from a tv their whiz-kid gets to work, and later from a couple of adults. This will definitely appeal to YA boys, probably to the girls as well. I was hoping this book would be a standalone, but alas, it ends on a cliff-hanger. If you don't like them, I'd wait for the rest of the books to come out.
BTW: this one just screams 'make me a movie'
